Hydrolyzed jojoba esters and moisturization. A small randomized preliminary study evaluated a lotion containing 1.25% hydrolyzed jojoba esters and 3.75% glycerol on lower-leg skin. The combination reduced transepidermal water loss more than glycerol in the base lotion alone at later measurement points. The study supports a formulation-level hydration rationale—not hair regrowth.
Ex-vivo human skin
Inflammatory signaling and extracellular-matrix markers. A 2024 human-skin organ-culture study found that topically applied jojoba wax reduced experimentally induced secretion of IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α and increased measurements related to hyaluronic acid and collagen III. Because the tissue was studied outside the body, these findings remain preclinical.
Laboratory evidence
Keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Jojoba liquid wax accelerated closure in a cultured-cell scratch model and increased collagen I synthesis in fibroblasts. These findings concern skin-cell repair pathways, not repair of a nonliving hair fiber or activation of a follicle.
Animal evidence
The lavender mouse study. Jojoba was used as the vehicle in which lavender essential oil was diluted. The positive hair-growth findings applied to lavender and minoxidil groups under the experimental conditions—not to jojoba as a hair-growth treatment.
Mechanistic boundary
The pancreatic beta-cell study. The study used an aqueous seed extract and simmondsin in pancreatic cells exposed to metabolic stress. The tissue, route, preparation, and outcome were unrelated to topical hair care and cannot substantiate follicular antioxidant claims.
