Meet hydrolyzed keratin

Hair is built predominantly from keratin proteins arranged into a highly organized fiber. The cortex provides much of the strand’s strength, shape and hair texture, while overlapping cuticle cells form its protective exterior. Repeated friction, ultraviolet exposure, bleaching, coloring and high-temperature styling can disrupt this organization and increase roughness, porosity, tangling and breakage.1

Intact keratin is a large, structurally complex protein. Hydrolysis breaks portions of that protein into smaller fragments. Depending on molecular size and the condition of the fiber, these fragments may remain primarily on the surface or interact with more porous areas of damaged hair strands.

What the science actually shows

Human evidence
No direct human clinical trial in the reviewed source set demonstrated that an ordinary topical hydrolyzed keratin shampoo, conditioner or tonic stimulates follicles, increases hair count or treats alopecia. Studies performed on excised hair fibers are useful for evaluating tensile behavior, combing and surface appearance, but they are not clinical hair-growth trials.
Ex-vivo evidence
Academic studies using hydrolyzed feather or wool keratin, recombinant keratin K31, enzyme-crosslinked systems and modified keratins have reported improvements in selected mechanical or cosmetic measurements on treated hair fibers.2345 The preparations differed materially, so the results cannot be assigned indiscriminately to every keratin product.
Animal evidence
A 2017 mouse study investigated a topical keratin extract and pathways associated with follicular activity.6 This preliminary animal work involved a materially different extract and does not establish that hydrolyzed keratin in hair products used by people promotes growth.
