Benefits of Saw Palmetto For Hair

Botanical Brilliance

Saw palmetto has a place in hair research, but the ingredient name is only the beginning. The useful questions are which preparation was studied, how it was used, and how that compares with the product in your routine.

Meet saw palmetto

Serenoa repens is a small palm native to the southeastern United States. Its fruit is used in botanical preparations. Historical use is context, not proof that an ingredient treats hair loss. [4]

What the human hair research shows

The most informative comparison is between tested preparations—not between ingredient names on the front of a bottle.

2023 · Oral and topical

Standardized saw-palmetto oil: a 16-week trial

Researchers randomized 80 adults to oral or topical preparations and corresponding placebos. Seventy-three completed the trial. Investigators reported reduced shedding and improved density with the tested VISPO preparations. Several authors worked for the extract manufacturer. These results do not establish the performance of other formulations. [1]

2026 · Oral extract

A six-month placebo-controlled trial

A randomized, double-blind study enrolled 60 adults with self-perceived thinning hair: 40 received a proprietary extract and 20 received placebo. The daily dose was 160 mg of SEREVELLE extract. At 180 days, several measured hair-count outcomes favored treatment; no treatment-related adverse events were reported. This small study supports further investigation of the tested extract, not a claim that all saw-palmetto formulas are equivalent. [2]

Does saw palmetto block DHT?

The oral group in the 2023 trial showed reduced blood DHT; the topical group did not. That does not establish how another formula affects DHT or whether blood changes explain its scalp effects. [1]

For the broader hormone context, see what DHT is and how it relates to hair loss.

Read the result at the right level: Ingredient research can inform a formula’s rationale. Establishing the performance of a finished product requires evidence for that finished product. Neither trial above evaluated Origenere Sempre or Naturale.

Powder, extract, oil, and topical products are not interchangeable

A laboratory analysis of 20 commercial saw-palmetto supplements found substantial differences in fatty-acid and phytosterol content across liquids, powders, dried berries, and tinctures. That chemistry study did not measure hair growth, but it demonstrates why equal weights or a shared botanical name do not establish equivalent composition. [3]

Which constituents are relevant?

The analysis measured fatty acids including lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic acids, along with plant sterols including beta-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol. Identifying these constituents is different from proving that each one produces a clinical hair benefit. [3]

A shampoo, scalp lotion, capsule, and berry tea are also different delivery formats. Do not use a tea recipe or a rinse-off product as a substitute for the specific interventions described in the clinical research.

How to evaluate saw-palmetto supplements for hair loss

Read the preparationLook for the plant part, powder or extract designation, and any disclosed standardization. Do not infer these details from the word “premium.”
Read the servingCheck the amount per serving and the suggested use. A blend’s total weight does not tell you the dose of each ingredient.
Match the evidenceAsk whether a cited study tested that extract, that route, or the complete product. These are different levels of support.
Check the complete formulaReview the other botanicals, vitamins, minerals, warnings, and your existing supplements—not saw palmetto in isolation.

Safety and appropriate use

NCCIH describes saw palmetto as generally well tolerated in studies; reported adverse effects can include digestive symptoms, dizziness, and headache. It also cautions that use during pregnancy or breastfeeding may be unsafe. “Botanical” does not mean suitable for everyone. [4]

Review a supplement with your healthcare professional when taking medication or managing a health condition. Follow the product’s directions rather than converting a study dose into a personal dosing plan. [4]

Sempre-specific guidance: Origenere advises against Sempre Hair Growth Vitamins during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Read the current product guidance before purchase. [5]

The Naturale collection provides a separate shopping route. Review individual product descriptions rather than assuming a topical cosmetic duplicates the oral or topical preparations used in a clinical trial.

Frequently asked questions

Can women use saw palmetto for hair?

Women participated in the recent trials, but that does not establish suitability for every woman or every formulation. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, medications, and the complete product all matter. [1] [2] [4]

Is oral saw palmetto better than topical saw palmetto?

The available studies do not establish a universal winner. Different preparations and outcomes should not be treated as a single head-to-head comparison of every capsule and topical product.

How long does saw palmetto take to work?

The recent studies assessed outcomes at 16 weeks and 180 days. Those are study durations, not promised result timelines for an individual or for Sempre. [1] [2]

Does Sempre contain the extracts tested in these trials?

Sempre’s published information identifies saw palmetto as an ingredient; it does not establish that its preparation and dose match VISPO or SEREVELLE. The trials should therefore not be presented as clinical tests of Sempre. [6]
