What the science actually shows

Human evidence

In a randomized study involving preterm infants, topical almond oil and sunflower seed oil were evaluated for their effects on skin. Neither showed harmful effects in the study, and almond oil may have improved stratum-corneum hydration. The population matters: these were preterm infants, not adults following a facial skincare routine. [3]

A 2025 study in term neonates similarly reported increased stratum-corneum hydration following topical almond-oil application. Again, this supports a hydration signal but should not be transformed into claims about collagen synthesis or treatment of adult skin disease. [4]

A moisturizer containing 7% sweet almond oil and 2% colloidal oatmeal was studied in moderate-to-severe hand dermatitis. The finished product was reported as safe and effective in that setting, but the outcome cannot scientifically be assigned to almond oil alone. [5]

Sweet almond oil has also been investigated in formulations used for pregnancy-associated striae. In one randomized study, a sweet almond oil cream reduced itching and erythema and limited progression over the abdominal surface compared with controls, but the groups did not significantly differ in the number or diameter of striae. Animal evidence
One mouse study reported protection against UVB-associated structural skin damage after almond-oil pretreatment. That is biologically interesting but remains animal evidence and does not establish prevention of photoaging in people. [13]

Chemical analyses consistently describe almond oil as an unsaturated-fatty-acid-rich fixed oil dominated by oleic and linoleic acids, with tocopherols, phytosterols and phenolic constituents varying by cultivar and processing.
